When most people think about smart house systems they think about Disneyland and the home of the future. They think of bland pastel kitchens with dog bowls that refill themselves and cooking an entire dinner with a single click of a button. Oddly enough, these images are not far from the truth, except perhaps the bland color scheme. Home automation has finally hit mainstream with the first integrated appliances, computers, and security systems finding their way into the average home. The basics of all smart house systems are to make the essentials of home living as easy and automated as possible. This generally includes the interconnecting all of the electronics and appliances through the house. The original systems were simple timers that would turn lights or coffee makers on and off. Today, smart house systems can connect with refrigerators to order milk when it runs low or automatically turn off lights and the air conditioner when everyone has left a room. Most smart house systems are integrated into the house during construction, but it has become very popular to retrofit houses with at least a few modern technologies for automation. Best of all, many of these systems are very affordable and can even be installed by the home owners themselves. This could include anything from a simple intercom to a Bluetooth sound system that can produce music anywhere in the house. The current trends with these automated systems have turned towards energy savings. Simple steps can be taken to limit energy consumption and lower a home's carbon footprint. The simplest additions may include motion sensors to turn lights and other appliances on and off to save on energy. The sky is the limit though when it comes to the more advanced setups that can draw from alternative energy sources, automate house cleaning, lock doors, and even cook meals.
